Station Review #183: Hammonton (NJT)

Hammonton is a station on NJT's Atlantic City Line. The station is located along front street, near the intersection of Line and Front streets in Hammonton, New Jersey.

History

Old station building

The first Hammonton station was built sometime around 1850. It was then bought out by the Pennsylvania Railroad and rebuilt sometime before 1907. In 1989, service was brought back to Atlantic City from Philadelphia and New York City from Amtrak, which necessitated a new station be built. That new station is the station used today. The old station depot is still standing.

Atlantic City Line train.

Hammonton is a fairly decent station, especially as far as NJT stations are concerned (looking at you, Delawanna).

Hammonton station has benches, TVMs, and maps. No countdown clock, however.

Platform.

The platform at Hammonton station is a full high level platform.

For accessibility, there's a ramp as well as stairs. There's also some bike parking.

Parking, but for cars this time.

The parking lot here has 220 spaces. There's also a bus bay here but the bus bay is completely unsigned and you just have to wave the bus down and hope it stops.

Bus Connections

Nearby bus stop

Hammonton station has two bus connections:
  • NJT 554 - Atlantic City Bus Terminal to Lindenwold: This bus essentially paralells and gives local service to the towns along the Atlantic City Line. Service runs about once every hour or so. You can catch this bus at Egg Harbor Road and Cherry Street.
  • SJTA 54/40 Shuttle:  This bus runs from the Hammonton Shop Rite (one trip a day runs further, from New Standards Senior Living) to Richland, via NJ-54 and US-40. This bus runs eight round trips a day. The 54/40 Shuttle connects to the 54/40 Feeder Shuttle links to this bus in Buena, connecting people even further towards Vineland itself. Besides the NJT 315 (which only runs a few times a day, at most) this is the only bus service in the nearby town of Folsom.

Points of Interest Near Hammonton Station

Downtown Hammonton

Hammonton is one of those towns filled with many fun activities for a daytrip. This among other things includes several antique shops, the old train station, a few museums, at least two really good Italian restaurants, and much more. This has definitely been one of the more fun places to spend about an hour in.
