Station Review #129: Delawanna (NJT)
Delawanna is a station on NJT's Main Line. The station is located at the intersection of Oak Street and Delawanna Avenue in the Delawanna neighborhood of Clifton, NJ. This station is mostly served by NJT's Main Line. A select few MNRR Port Jervis Line trains a day stop here as well.
Tour
What is this, MARC?
Delawanna station is completely inaccessible and has a low platform, one that's even worse than some SEPTA stations. There is no tactile strip at the end of the platform.
The platform itself is just asphalt. The tracks are above it, and there's a fence in between each track to stop you from crossing.
Inbound shelter
The shelter for the inbound platform looks kind of like a dog house.
This signage is very bad, but I'll touch on that later.
This ramp meanwhile is completely inaccessible. It lacks any flat sections for resting or railings. Even if it was, what use would it have? the platforms are completely inaccessible themselves.
Tiny bike racks
Bad signage
Remember when I mentioned the signage being bad? This is exactly what I meant. There is a sign mentioning the accessible entrance being the staircase. If you're familiar with this station, you might realize that it's about the ramp, but that's not even an accessible ramp either! This sign lies to passengers, and puts the disabled who use NJT in harms way by touting accessibility they don't deliver on. I'm honestly surprised nobody has sued NJT over this.
The outbound sections is just as depressing as the inbound section. Everything around here is heavily fenced off.
A heavily fenced off parking lot, because of course
This parking lot seems to be most of the reason this station even exists. This parking lot is almost always empty.
Overall, Delawanna is a station that actively seems hostile to the average human.
Bus Connections
There are four bus connections at Delawanna station
- 27 - Mt. Prospect: This bus is an odd one, running from Delawanna to Irvington Bus Terminal via Newark. However, only six buses a day actually go all the way to Delawanna. Most instead seem to short turn at Mt. Prospect Avenue and Delevan Avenue in the Forest Hill neighborhood of Newark.
- 74 - Paterson-Nutley-Newark: This is a bus that links Branch Brook Park Station to Paterson via Franklin Avenue and Main Avenue. This is a DIY transfer that's a bit under half a mile away on Main and Delawanna Avenues.
- 74u - Paterson-Nutley-Newark: This is a less frequent version of the 74 bus that goes from Branch Brook Park via Belleville and Delawanna (along Union Avenue mainly) before following the rest of the normal 74 route to Paterson.
- 190 - Paterson-Secaucus-New York: This bus goes from Paterson to Secaucus before expressing to Port Authority Bus Terminal. This is a special variant that deviates into the neighborhood of Delawanna.
Points of Interest Near Delawanna
There is nothing of note near Delawanna at all. There's the neighborhood of Delawanna itself, but that place has nothing in it worth going to. It's almost entirely residential and industrial, with some very suburban commercial development a few miles away.
There's a park named Dunney Park nearby, I guess that's something.
