Station Review #124: Highland (SEPTA)

Image
Highland is a station on SEPTA's Chestnut Hill West line. The station is located at 8412 Seminole Avenue in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. If one doesn't count the Chestnut Hill West Line platforms at North Philadelphia station as a separate station, Highland station has the lowest ridership of any station on the Chestnut Hill West Line, as well as the 9th least used overall.  History The Philadelphia, Germantown, and Chestnut Hill branch of the Connecting Railway (a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad made to connect) was established in 1884, and a line from North Philadelphia to Chestnut Hill to connect with the PRR main line was finished in 1887, and with it Highland station opened. A large depot was built for the station, but it didn't seem to be used a lot.  In 1916, this section of the PRR Chestnut Hill branch was grade separated, and with that the old depot was demolished. In its place went a small wooden shelter. At some ...

Station Review #123: Tulpehocken (SEPTA)

Image
Tulpehocken is a station on SEPTA's Chestnut Hill West line. The station is located at Tulpehocken Avenue near Wayne Avenue in the Blue Bell Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia.  Tour Tulpehocken feels like a lot of the other stations on the Chestnut Hill West Branch. As is the norm here, nothing is accessible.  The depot has since fallen into disrepair and disuse.  The outbound platform That's most of the outbound platform right there. Outbound shelter   Some of the Chestnut Hill West stations have a shelter that only has a map and schedules inside.  No bench though, everyone can just sit in the rain instead! Rest of the outbound platform Stairs to the tunnel between the platforms The tunnel Dingy, as per usual with these tunnels The old depot Parking lot The entire station from one of the parking lots This place seems a lot more sad...

Station Review #111: Wynnefield (SEPTA)

Image
Wynnefield Avenue is a station on SEPTA's Cynwyd Line, located at the intersection of Bryn Mawr and Wynnefield avenues in Philadelphia's Wynnefield neighborhood. Wynnefield Avenue station is also oftentimes just known as Wynnefield.  Wynnefield Avenue is along SEPTA's Cynwyd Line, which boasts the lowest ridership among every SEPTA line.  History Wynnefield station in 2012 Very little about the history of Wynnefield Avenue is known. All that is known is that the station was rebuilt in 2019.  Tour There's not much at Wynnefield station, but that's more than enough. Wynnefield Avenue is not a station that needs a lot of frills. Stairs Small parking lot Map and schedule The platform Wynnefield Avenue is accessible, like all of the Cynwyd line stations.  The shelter The ramp Bus Connections There is one bus connection at Wynnefield Avenue: the 40. The ...

Station Review #98: 49th Street (SEPTA)

Image
49th Street is a station on SEPTA's Media/Wawa line. The station is located at 49th and Chester in Philadelphia's Kingsessing neighborhood. 49th Street is a Zone 1 station.  History The old 49th Street station  It's relatively unknown when there started being a train station in the location where 49th Street station is today. The station was known to have existed by 1886, and the line it was on started construction in 1852. The station did not originally exist at the time and most likely was added as an infill station in the 1860s or 1870s.  Any old station house in the area was most likely demolished in the 1950s-1960s, replaced by a few small shelters. Years later, some ramps and mini-high platforms were added to make the station accessible. Not much else has changed since then. Tour Path to the station  The shelter for the outbound platform For some reason, the shelter at the outbound platform is very far away from t...
