Station Review #100: BARTA Transportation Center/Reading Transportation Center (AMTRAK/BARTA)

BARTA Transportation Center is a station in Reading, PA. The station is located on Franklin Street, near the old Reading Train station History The old station, now a brewpub and transportation museum There had been passenger rail service at Reading since 1871, when the Wilmington and Northern trains started stopping at a station on front and Penn Streets. Franklin Street station is the one pictured above. The original station at Franklin Street was constructed in 1884, and replaced by the Reading Railroad in 1930. This station was built as an infill for Downtown Reading, since the Reading Outer station was in the middle of the city.  The line changed owners many times until it eventually got to conrail, which allowed SEPTA service on the line. Trains ran here through to Pottsville and Philadelphia until 1981. The Pottsville line was one of the earlier lines to experience cutbacks that many other lines did as well. Charles W. Dickinson Transportation Center, also known as Pottstown Transportation Center, is a bus center located in downtown Pottstown, PA. The station is served by Amtrak and PART buses. History Pottstown was originally a train station on the Reading Railroad's main line, with service between Pottsville and Philadelphia. The original station was built by the Pennsylvania and Reading in 1867, and was only torn down and rebuilt in 1928.   Pottstown station saw service up until 1981, when SEPTA cut back service to Norristown due to a lack of funding for more diesel trains to run with their electric trains in more far flung areas. In 1984, the station building was added to the national register of historic places.  At some point, the bus berths near the former train station started getting called Pottstown Transportation Center. Princeton Junction is an Amtrak/NJT station on the Northeast Corridor line. The station itself is located at Wallace Road in West Windsor Township, in Mercer County, NJ.  Services Provided Two Amtrak and two NJT services go to Princeton Junction Station, these services are: Amtrak: Keystone Corridor: This is a service that links New York City, Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Harrisburg Northeast Regional: This is a service that goes along the Northeast Corridor mainline, linking the cities of Boston, Providence, New Haven, New York, Newark, Trenton, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, and DC. Some trips go south into Virginia along three branch lines. After splitting off after Alexandria, one line goes to Charlottesville, Lynchburg, and Roanoke. The other two go to Richmond, and then split immediately after to go to Newport News or Norfolk.
