Station Review #147: Pennsauken Transit Center (NJT)

Pennsauken is an NJT train station located on Derousse avenue in Pennsauken, New Jersey. This station was originally planned as an infill station for both the River Line and Atlantic City Line where one can transfer between the two lines without taking a different NJT bus to 30th Street in Philadelphia.

Services

Bus stop

Pennsauken station has two different main services, both provided by NJT

Atlantic City Line - Regional trains from 30th Street Station to Atlantic City via Camden and Atlantic Counties. Runs about once every 90 minutes per direction, sometimes more or less depending on what day it is and what time.

River Line - Medium Rail trains from Waterfront Entertainment Center (Camden) to Trenton Transit Center

Additionally, buses are provided, listed below:

404 - Philadelphia to Pennsauken Industrial Park (Most buses go to Cherry Hill Mall instead) via Westfield Avenue. This variant only runs a few times a day.

417 - 30th Street Station to Fair Grounds Plaza (Mount Holly) via US - 130. Note: this route expresses from Pennsauken TC to Willingboro, where it then does what is basically a 45 degree turn and makes local service in Willingboro and points beyond. This bus runs four times a day to Philadelphia, and three times a day to Willingboro.

419 - Walter Rand Transportation Center to Riverside. This paralells the River Line and basically provides local service to the towns served by the River Line. This bus rums hourly outside of evenings, where it runs bi-hourly.

Tour

Mmmm, asphalt

Pennsauken Transportation Center is an actual substantial building.

More parking

I don't see why this station needs so much parking. While it is near the Betsy Ross Bridge, it's hard to access this station form the bridge via driving.

Bus shelter

This is a bus shelter for the few bus routes that go here.

Gendered single occupancy bathrooms outside for... some reason? I don't get it. I believe the bathrooms were locked, if I recall correctly.

River Line Platform

The platform for the River Line is about standard for River Line stations

More amenities

This section of the River Line is unfortunately single tracked, presenting a possible bottleneck that has no real reason to exist.

Telephone

I've never gotten why these are at every River line station

The Building

The building is incredibly basic looking. While it doesn't need to be much more than this, it still feels a little bit bland. The station is thankfully open all day, every day, so long as service is running.

Info panels

Elevator, elevator equipment room, and something else.

There's a few very conspicuous doors in this section of the room. No indoor seating here though.

Stairs

The same info boards as earlier

Empty room

I guess this room is so that there's somewhere dry to sit in the rain.

Atlantic City Line Platform

The view to the Delair bridge

The platforms

This section of the Atlantic City Line is double tracked, so two platforms.

Entrance to waiting areas on other side

I couldn't entirely figure out how to get to the other platform.

Countdown clock

A different view of the station and giant parking lot

The same info board from earlier for a third time

Do we really need this many of this same information board?

Local history

More local history

A poem

Artpiece acknowledgement

One thing I've always liked about NJT is that in most of their stations, they have an art piece of some form for people to look at. I wish more transit systems did this.

Foamer shot

And once my train to Philadelphia was here, it was time for me to go. When I visited, I had successfully performed the River Lime to ACL tranfer intended for the station.

Points of interest near Pennsauken Transit Center

There's some houses nearby, a highway, a few smaller parks, and a cemetery. That's about it.
