Station Review #136: Miquon (SEPTA)

Image
Miquon is a station on SEPTA's Manayunk-Norristown Line. The station is located at River and Manor Roads in the village of Miquon, PA, itself located within Whitemarsh Township, PA. Four Manaynk-Norristown Line trains a day end at Miquon, and the station is often used as a turnback point in various situations, having more operational importance than the average station along the line.  History Miquon station seems to have been built as an infill station sometime around 1880, and named Lafayette. At some point, a shelter was added. In 1921, the station was renamed to Miquon. Besides things like signal upgrades, not much has changed since then.  Tour Train The station  Miquon station, while quaint, is not accessible. Validator Parking One of Miquon's only real amenities is parking, but it's not even the most well suited for this compared to other stations along the line.  The old depot Due to terra...

Station Review #124: Highland (SEPTA)

Image
Highland is a station on SEPTA's Chestnut Hill West line. The station is located at 8412 Seminole Avenue in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. If one doesn't count the Chestnut Hill West Line platforms at North Philadelphia station as a separate station, Highland station has the lowest ridership of any station on the Chestnut Hill West Line, as well as the 9th least used overall.  History The Philadelphia, Germantown, and Chestnut Hill branch of the Connecting Railway (a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad made to connect) was established in 1884, and a line from North Philadelphia to Chestnut Hill to connect with the PRR main line was finished in 1887, and with it Highland station opened. A large depot was built for the station, but it didn't seem to be used a lot.  In 1916, this section of the PRR Chestnut Hill branch was grade separated, and with that the old depot was demolished. In its place went a small wooden shelter. At some ...

Station Review #123: Tulpehocken (SEPTA)

Image
Tulpehocken is a station on SEPTA's Chestnut Hill West line. The station is located at Tulpehocken Avenue near Wayne Avenue in the Blue Bell Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia.  Tour Tulpehocken feels like a lot of the other stations on the Chestnut Hill West Branch. As is the norm here, nothing is accessible.  The depot has since fallen into disrepair and disuse.  The outbound platform That's most of the outbound platform right there. Outbound shelter   Some of the Chestnut Hill West stations have a shelter that only has a map and schedules inside.  No bench though, everyone can just sit in the rain instead! Rest of the outbound platform Stairs to the tunnel between the platforms The tunnel Dingy, as per usual with these tunnels The old depot Parking lot The entire station from one of the parking lots This place seems a lot more sad...

Station Review #121: Croydon (SEPTA)

Image
Croydon is a station on the Trenton Line. The station is located at Bristol Pike and Cedar Avenue in Croydon, PA. Croydon is a census designated place in Bristol Township, located in south central Bucks County.  History Croydon station has a far longer and more storied history than one would expect, going back to 1834 with the opening of the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad. Originally, the station was about 1000 feet or so away from the site of the current station. At the time, the station was cakled Schenck station, named after Dr. Joseph H. Schenck, who owned a large mansion nearby at the time. Schencks was a rich man, and there is a possibility that he had a railway branch off of the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad. No one knows when exactly the station was renamed, or rebuilt the first time. All that is known is this it was after 1885.  Croydon station today is virtually unrecognizable from the Croydon station of the past. The old station house ...
