Station Review #75: Wayne Junction (SEPTA)

Image
Sign Wayne Junction is a train station located in the Wayne Junction neighborhood of Philadelphia. It has service from SEPTA's Airport, Chestnut Hill East, Fox Chase, Glenside Combined, Lansdale - Doylestown, and Warminister lines.  History  Old Wayne Junction station Wayne Junction was first built in 1881 as a station along Germantown Pike that also served as a junction station. This junction allowed trains from Germantown, Chestnut Hill, Bethlehem, Doylestown, and Newtown to all converge along the Reading Main line, which made transfers more convenient for passengers. Both the Reading Railroad and the B&O railroad used the station, so eventually, services from all over the US that went through Philadelphia started going through Wayne Junction as well.  Alas, the era of train being the main mode of travel eventually ended in the US by the 1950s. This caused the decline of Wayne Junction station. Even after this, there still was intercity train...

Station Review #34: Cheltenham (SEPTA)

Image
Cheltenham is a station on SEPTA's Fox Chase Line, located in Cheltenham Village, a village located inside Cheltenham Township. Or at least, it's supposed to be. The station is actually located in the Burholme neighborhood of Philadelphia, but the city limits are about half a block away (Ironically, Lawndale station is located in Cheltenham Township, but in a portion where the people of Cheltenham Township itself cannot  access it because of the country club behind it). History Station in the 1930s Cheltenham Station was originally an old wooden structure built sometime in the mid to late 1800s. It is very likely that the station was made in the 1860s by the Philadelphia, New York, and Newtown Railroad, or the 1880s-1890s by the Reading Railroad. When exactly the station was constructed aside, Cheltenham station had this building for many decades afterwards.  Cheltenham station in the 1990s The station lasted a long time, up until 1993, when...

Station Review #32: Olney (SEPTA)

Image
Olney is a SEPTA station located in the Olney neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. Olney station is the sixth station on the Fox Chase Line, and the first unique station on the line, going northbound. History Original Olney station, from the 1860s Olney station was originally built in the 1860s or so by the Philadelphia, Newtown, snd New York Railroad, as one of the first stations. The PNNYRR itself was then absorbed by the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, which then made a new station in 1906.  The original station remained for a while afterwards, and nobody knows when it was torn down. I hypothesize that it was torn down in the 1950s, or so.  Credit to West2K for the photos shown here I could not find any color photos of Olney station from before it was demolished, despite that happening fairly recently. I have seen the building itself before, and the building is brick, with the walls red. The roof was black, meanwhile, similar to many other roofs out ...
