Station Review #96: North Wales (SEPTA)

Image
North Wales is a station on SEPTA's Lansdale-Doylestown Line. The station is located at 5th and Walnut Street in North Wales, PA.  History It's unknown when the original North Wales station was built, but what is known is that the North Pennsylvania Railroad rebuilt it in 1873. At some point, this station was heavily remodeled by the Reading Railroad, including a removal of the cupola. Despite this, North Wales station remains as one of the few still-operating stations with a usable depot built by the North Pennsylvania Railroad, along with Doylestown   In 2008, North Wale was remodeled again, with the station being made fully accessible while the building remained intact. North Hills is a station on SEPTA's Lansdale-Doylestown Line. The station was meant to serve the village of Edge Hill, just north of Glenside.  In 1907, a group of golfers formed the Edge Hill County Club, which they renamed to the North Hills Country Club one year later. This country club was a destination for many of the richest people in the Philadelphia area. The village of Edge Hill started to be called North Hills for this reason.  In 1923, the station was first renamed to North Glenside due to Glenside itself having grown northwards, and then renamed again in 1931 to North Hills. The Reading Railroad then replaced the bridge and old statio...

Station Review #75: Wayne Junction (SEPTA)

Image
Sign Wayne Junction is a train station located in the Wayne Junction neighborhood of Philadelphia. It has service from SEPTA's Airport, Chestnut Hill East, Fox Chase, Glenside Combined, Lansdale - Doylestown, and Warminister lines.  History  Old Wayne Junction station Wayne Junction was first built in 1881 as a station along Germantown Pike that also served as a junction station. This junction allowed trains from Germantown, Chestnut Hill, Bethlehem, Doylestown, and Newtown to all converge along the Reading Main line, which made transfers more convenient for passengers. Both the Reading Railroad and the B&O railroad used the station, so eventually, services from all over the US that went through Philadelphia started going through Wayne Junction as well.  Alas, the era of train being the main mode of travel eventually ended in the US by the 1950s. This caused the decline of Wayne Junction station. Even after this, there still was intercity train...
