Station Review #178: Radnor (SEPTA)

Radnor is a station on SEPTA's Paoli-Thorndale Line. The station is  located on King of Prussia Road in Radnor Township, Pennsylvania. Radnor station is a zone three station. This is not to be confused with the other Radnor station, on the M line.

History

Photo from 1856

Radnor station was originally built sometime between 1837 and 1851 by the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad, possibly as a in-fill station? At the time, the station was named Morgan's Corner. The station was renamed in the 1860s, before then being rebuilt. It's likely the station was rebuilt again at some point later on to elevate the station. It clearly hasn't been rebuilt since otherwise.

At some point around the 1980s to 1990s, mini highs were added.

Tour

Train at the platform
Radnor station has a low platform. Considering the curve in the area and the canopy, this station would be difficult to make accessible on its own. There have been plans to rebuild this and the Radnor station on the M line as one station. None of these plans have come to fruition, however.

The other platform
The other platform has a shelter and many benches.

Radnor station has a few mini-highs.

Inside the depot

In the waiting room there is also a green wooden bench and two more bathrooms.

Ramp to the platforms
Funnily enough, Radnor has ramps to the platforms themselves.

Tunnel
The tunnel between the platforms is also fully accessible.

Transit Connections

There are two transit connections at Radnor station:

  • M - 69th Street Transit Center to Norristown Transit Center: Also known as the Norristown High Speed Line (NHSL), the route 100, and the Philadelphia and Western, this is a light-metro line ran by SEPTA, one of the few light metro lines in the US. Formerly an interurban, it still operates a lot like an old interurban At peak times, frequencies are a train every 15 minutes per direction, or a train every 30 minutes otherwise. You can transfer to this at the Radnor station further south along King of Prussia Road.
  • 106 - Paoli to 69th Street Transit Center: This bus runs from Paoli Hospital to 69th Street Transit Center via Lancaster Pike, bringing local service to Lancaster Pike. On August 23rd, this will be merged with the 105, which performs a similar service, although it as of now truncates in Rosemont. This will bring 105 service back to Radnor, a service which got cut back in the late 2000s. This is essentially the status quo, just with a different number.

Points of Interest Near Radnor Station

There's a small apartment complex and some houses nearby. On the other side though, all you get is a business park and not much else.

Transit oriented development is a weak spot of Radnor station.
