Station Review #120: Wayne (SEPTA)

Wayne is a station on SEPTA's Paoli-Thorndale line. The station is located at Station Road and Wayne Avenue in Wayne, PA. Wayne is a village located within Radnor Township, along Lancaster Avenue. Many people unfamiliar with the area tend to get Wayne and Wayne Junction stations mixed up. These are two different stations, though it is possible to get a one seat ride between both some times of the day.

Tour

Wayne is fully accessible, one of the best stations on the Paoli-Thorndale line for this reason alone.

Outbound platform

Original platforms

Wayne is one of those stations where it clearly was rebuilt, but the old station was historically significant enough to the town, so it remained.

Old outbound platform next to the new one

This two platform design is cool because it gives two extra emergency platforms, essentially.

The station house itself

Wayne's station house is currently on the National Register of Historic Places. It's the original station house built by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Tunnel between the platforms

The fact that this tunnel is fully accessible is an absolute rarity. For once, one of these tunnels also doesn't look incredibly dingy!

Seating

At some point, Wayne's station building was turned into a restaurant.

Passage between the tunnel, ramp, and street

Passage along Wayne Avenue under the bridge

I guess this exists as an alternate route between the platforms?

Old bench

Both sides seem to have some sort of little garden near the ramps to the platform.

Bus Connections

Wayne has one bus connection:

  • 106 - Paoli to 69th St Transit Center: This bus is essentially a local bus that goes along Lancaster Pike through most of the Main Line towns, giving them local bus service. In Ardmore, the bus goes onto Argyle road and then Haverford Road in Wynnewood. Basically every station between Ardmore and Paoli connects to this bus.
There should definitely be more bus connections at Wayne, or at least at one of the stations nearby it.

Points of Interest near Wayne Station

Wayne is the only Main Line town in Delaware County that actually has a downtown of any significance. There are a lot of fancy shops and housing near the station itself.
