Station Review #143: Orange Street (SEPTA)

What used to be the sign

Orange Street is the westbound terminus station for SEPTA's D1 line. The station is located at State and Orange Streets in Media, PA.

History

Media waa a borough formed in 1850, its borders formed from the sale of four farms. Much of it was quickly built and made the county seat of Delaware County. In 1913, the Philadelphia and West Chester Traction Company made two new interurban lines from their terminal at 69th Street Transit Center: one to Sharon Hill and one to Media. These two lines are the only remaining lines made by this company. The Media line terminated at Orange Street, and nothing about that has changed. The line changed hands multiple times but was never extended or cut back.

Sometime in the 1990s-2000s or so, a shelter was built here. It's been almost exactly the same since then.

Tour

The station as a whole

This is essentially just a modified bus stop.

Former clock

What was the point of adding a clock here? These aren't countdown clocks, and some more substantial D1/D2 stations don't even have these. Almost every single one of them is also broken.

Trolley at Orange Street station

Supposedly, there's a bike rack here. I couldn't find it, and I doubt the average biker would be able to easily find it either.

Transit Connections

There are three different usable transit connections nearby:

Media-Wawa Line: This is a Regional Rail line linking the village of Wawa (Middletown Township, within very short walking distance of Chester Heights, PA) to Center City via much of central Delaware County. You can take this at Media station, which is ironically not located in Media itself.

110 - Penn State University to 69th Street Transit Center: This is a bus that runs about once every half hour. Unfortunately, every other trip short turns at Springfield Mall, meaning that this bus otherwise runs once an hour. The 110 runs via Township Line Road and Baltimore Pike, and acts as a more local and deviatory version of the 111 bus. One major difference between the 110 and 111 is that the 110 does not bypass Media and branches off in Lima, connecting 69th Street Transit Center to Lima itself. You can catch this bus along Baltimore Pike.

118 - Newtown Square to Chester Transit Center: This bus runs north-south through mich of Delaware County, roughly following Providence Road. It links the towns of Chester, Garden City, Rose Valley, Wallingford, Media, Rose Tree, and Newtown Square. You can catch this bus a few blocks away along Jackson Street. Unfortunately, the 118 runs about hourly.

Points of Interest Near Orange Street station

Downtown Media is directly next to this place. There's a lot of stores and restaurants nearby. Media is the quintessential example of a streetcar suburb, especially since the streetcar is still there. The town of Media is TOD central.
