Station Review #165: 96th Street-2nd av (NYCMTA)


96th Street is the current terminus station for NYCMTA's 2nd Avenue Subway. This station is mainly served by the Q train, and currently nothing else.

This station has an island platform, though I'm fairly certain all of the 2nd Avenue subway stations do. 

Upper mezzanine

I'm not sure why this is needed. When this was finished in 2016, it was hilariously over-budget. This is the definition of hubris, of pointless waste from endless streams of consultants. If the bloat of modern day US transit projects was a place, it'd be here.

Besides all of this, 96th Street-2nd av is a pleasant station, and it seems to do most things well enough to be usable by those who need it. 

Bus Connections

There are only three bus connections you can make here that are actually convenient from 96th St-2nd Av and not a different line. These include: 
 
  • M15/M15 SBS: These are both buses that run from 125th Street down to the South Ferry stations, essentially across Manhattan. These buses run via 1st Av and 2nd Av. The SBS version is essentially a BRT. Both together run a bus every 5 or so minutes, if not more. 
  • M96: This is a bus that runs along 96th St from 1st Av to Broadway, also across Manhattan.  This bus runs about once every 6 or so minutes.

  • Metropolitan Health center
  • Several parks and playgrounds
  • Several apartments
  • Multiple schools of different types
  • The Islamic Cultural Center of New York

There's a lot more I can list, but I'd be here all day. Like many stations in NYC, 96th Street-2nd av has done Transit Oriented Development well.

North Wales is a station on SEPTA's Lansdale-Doylestown Line. The station is located at 5th and Walnut Street in North Wales, PA.  History It's unknown when the original North Wales station was built, but what is known is that the North Pennsylvania Railroad rebuilt it in 1873. At some point, this station was heavily remodeled by the Reading Railroad, including a removal of the cupola. Station Review #78: Cornwells Heights (Amtrak/SEPTA)

Cornwells Heights (pronounced and often misspelled as "Cornwell Heights") is a train station along the Northeast Corridor. The station is located at 700 Station Avenue in Cornwells Heights, PA, a CDP located within Bensalem, PA.  The station is mainly served by SEPTA's Trenton line. Despite this, three trips of Amtrak's Keystone Service stop at the station every day: 640 (7:02 AM), 649 (3:51 PM), and 655 (7:40 PM). Cornwells Heights is currently the least used Amtrak station in the state of Pennsylvania.  From Station Avenue to the edge of the park and ride, this station is about half a mile long.  History Despite how it is today, Cornwells Heights was not nearly as important as it is now for much of its existence. The first known iteration of Cornwells Heights station was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1891. Station Review #54: Gwynedd Valley (SEPTA)

Gwynedd Valley is a station on SEPTA's Lansdale - Doylestown line at its intersection with Plymouth Avenue in the small village of Gwynedd Valley, PA.  History Information about the history of Gwynedd Valley station is scarce. This station dates back to the 1850s. It's unknown if the station building is that old, or if it's actually a newer station built by the Reading Railroad after the acquisition of the North Penn Railroad main line. Not long after Gwynedd Valley station was built, wealthy people started moving to that area in droves. Today, many very wealthy people still live in the area.  Gwynedd Valley station is well known for an illustration of it being on the October 7th, 1961 cover of the Saturday Evening Post .
