Station Review #142: Teterboro (NJT)

Teterboro is a station on NJT's Pascack Valley Line. The station is located along Green street near the overpass with US-46 in the borough of Teterboro, NJ.

Tour

This picture is almost all of Teterboro station. What a station it is.

That is the single platform. It's very thin, with more space for the tracks than the actual station itself.

Folded bike for comparison

Much of the small platform is the very wide yellow line, which lacks a tactile strip.

Closer look at the yellow strip

Behind the platform is a guard rail from a highway, probably added to seperate the parking lot from the platform. This probably has to do with the fact that the platform itself is asphalt.

Another view of tracks and fence

That fence wasn't always there. People often used to get to this station from the dead end street to the west of the station named Williams Avenue. the fence itself was installed in February of 2013, and was originally a barbed wire fence. This fence forced anyone walking from the west side of the station (the side which people actually live on) to walk along NJ-17 and US-46, both of which have absolutely no sidewalks whatsoever.

People kept cutting holes in the fence that NJT added that they eventually just removed the barbed wire and added a door in the fence. The fact that forcing people to cross active train tracks is the safer option is nothing short of despicable.

Other side of tracks

NJT has the space to add a second platform here and make the station into a station with the Spanish Solution, but they probably won't do that, despite how easily it would solve many of this station's problems. Considering how thin the actual platform is, I seriously doubt this is much worse. An alternative is to actually put a signed crossing, but that probably won't happen either.

Sign that talks about permit parking, with information about the schedule for a bustitution happening soon

Normally this would be the large sign that says the name of the station.

Speaking of parking, there's a small parking lot nearby the station too. Considering how close this station is to multiple highways, it's hilarious how little parking there is. The worst part is, it's all permit parking too, so if you're parking and taking the train in to spend a day in NYC, you can't do that unless you already normally use this station.

Shelter

The shelter is tiny and looks akin to a phone booth.

Schedule in front of shelter

Inside the shelter, there's a TVM and a hostile bench, and not much else.

Lone bench and trash can

Train

The platform is far enough onto the ground from the train itself that I almost couldn't get on.

Bus Connections

There's multiple bus connections near Teterboro station. These bus connections include:

  • 76 - Newark Penn Station to Hackensack via Meadowlands: This is a less frequent variant of the 76 that deviates through some industrial parks. This version is much safer to access, only requiring a walk through a shopping center to the intersection of US-46 and Industrial Avenue/Hollister Road. Unfortunately, this version only runs six trips a day, at peak times only.
  • 144 - PABT to Rochelle Park via Teterboro: This is a peak only express/commuter bus between NYC and Rochelle Park. This only runs about eight trips per day per direction, with trips from NYC running in the morning, and trips back in the evening. Catch this at Green Street and North Street. This is by far the safest bus connection.
  • 151 - PABT to Paterson: This is another commuter/express bus, running a similar schedule to the 144. Catch this at US-46 and Industrial Avenue/Hollister Road.
  • 161 - PABT to Paterson: This is a similar route to the 151, only its more local and runs 24/7, with a peak frequency of about one bus every 10 minutes. Catch this at US-46 and Industrial Avenue/Hollister Road

There are buses that can also be accessed along Williams Avenue, but all of these involve crossing NJ-17 at an incredibly unsafe location to do so or involve a walk over half a mile, and are thus excluded.

Points of Interest near Teterboro Station

On one side of the tracks is the Williams Avenue exit, which leads to Hasbrouck heights. Hasbrouck Heights has some decent density and a nice downtown. The problem is, NJT seems pretty hesitant about that access point. Without it, it's a lomg hike on highways with no sidewalks to get to that town.

The other side of the tracks, meanwhile? Very little. There's a plaza with a Walmart and Costco in it, as well as the Teterboro airport. Walking around here is very difficult, and honestly a little bit scary. The entirety of the nearby Berrys Creek is a superfund site, much like 27th Street on Metra. Everything else is stroads as far as the eye can see.
