Station Review #127: Burns Commons (The Hop)

Image
Burns Commons is the northern terminus station for the M-Line of The Hop. The station is located on Ogden Avenue between Farwell and Prospect Avenues in the Yankee Hill neighborhood on the southern edge of the East Side of Milwaukee. Tour There's a bench and a schedule, and little to nothing else.  Notice about the Festival Line service The trolley itself There's not much else here.  Bus Connections There's only one connection to the MCTS bus system here, and that's the 30 bus. This bus runs from the Upper East Side, along Wisconsin Avenue and then along Sherman Boulevard to the North Bay Shopping Mall. The M-Line streetcar goes to many of the same places that the 30 bus does in Downtown, it just does so at a snail's pace in comparison.  Points of Interest Near Burns Commons Immediately next to the station itself is the Burns Commons park. The Jewish Museum of Milwaukee is also nearby, as well a...

Station Review #126: Belmont-O'Hare (CTA)

Image
Belmont is a station on CTA's Blue Line. The station is located on Belmont Avenue and Kimball Avenue in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood. This station is called Belmont-O Hare to disambiguate it from the other Belmont station, which is on the Red Line.  History The old station house, 2009 Belmont station was originally built in the early 1970s as part of the extension of the West-Northwest line towards O-Hare International Airport. Eventually, this line was renamed to the Blue Line. In 2017 the station was rebuilt, with work finishing in 2019. Tour The station house Belmont is a normal L station, at least from above.  The entrance and bus loop Sign on top of station Stairs down Belmont is not an accessible station. There is no sign of elevators of any form, despite the station having been remodeled within the last ten years.  Corridor into the station Apparently CTA stations have vending ma...

Station Review #125: Neenah Transit Center (Valley Transit)

Image
Neenah Transit Center is one of the two transit centers of the Valley Transit system. This station is a relocation of the previous Church Street station, and was originally designed to be temporary, yet is still there multiple years later.  Services Four fixed bus routes depart from Neenah Transit Center, these are:  Valley Transit 30 - Neenah/Menasha: Appleton/Valley Transit Center to Neenah Transit Center via Menasha 31 - East Neenah: Neenah Transit Center to Doty Island and south end of Neenah 32 - West Neenah: Neenah Transit Center to west end of Neenah 41 - West Fox Valley: Neenah Transit Center to Fox Crossing Go Transit Go Connect: Would this count as microtransit? It uses a taxi between Neenah Transit Center and Oshkosh-Downtown Transit Center. You need to call Oshkosh City Cab the day before (before 4:30 PM) to ride this. This replaced the old Route 10 bus that went between the two transit centers. When I tried riding it, Oshkosh City Cab compl...

Station Review #124: Highland (SEPTA)

Image
Highland is a station on SEPTA's Chestnut Hill West line. The station is located at 8412 Seminole Avenue in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. If one doesn't count the Chestnut Hill West Line platforms at North Philadelphia station as a separate station, Highland station has the lowest ridership of any station on the Chestnut Hill West Line, as well as the 9th least used overall.  History The Philadelphia, Germantown, and Chestnut Hill branch of the Connecting Railway (a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad made to connect) was established in 1884, and a line from North Philadelphia to Chestnut Hill to connect with the PRR main line was finished in 1887, and with it Highland station opened. A large depot was built for the station, but it didn't seem to be used a lot.  In 1916, this section of the PRR Chestnut Hill branch was grade separated, and with that the old depot was demolished. In its place went a small wooden shelter. At some ...

Station Review #123: Tulpehocken (SEPTA)

Image
Tulpehocken is a station on SEPTA's Chestnut Hill West line. The station is located at Tulpehocken Avenue near Wayne Avenue in the Blue Bell Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia.  Tour Tulpehocken feels like a lot of the other stations on the Chestnut Hill West Branch. As is the norm here, nothing is accessible.  The depot has since fallen into disrepair and disuse.  The outbound platform That's most of the outbound platform right there. Outbound shelter   Some of the Chestnut Hill West stations have a shelter that only has a map and schedules inside.  No bench though, everyone can just sit in the rain instead! Rest of the outbound platform Stairs to the tunnel between the platforms The tunnel Dingy, as per usual with these tunnels The old depot Parking lot The entire station from one of the parking lots This place seems a lot more sad...
