Station Review #179: Glenview (Amtrak/Metra)
Glenview is a station along the Chicago and Milwaukee Subdivision, located in Glenview, IL. The station is served by Amtrak and Metra trains. Glenview is a zone 3 station.
History
The tracks through Glenview were laid down in 1871, to help rebuild Chicago. A station was added for the small village of Glenview not long after. This station was kept until the 1950s, when it was replaced. The current station replaced that station in 1995.
Service used to run on this from the Milwaukee Road, on its local commuter service between Milwaukee and Chicago. Service also once was ran by Amtrak on its Lake Country Limited, a train that was ran from Chicago Union station to Janesville. The Lake Country Limited only ran from April 15th, 2000 to September 23rd, 2001.
Services
Multiple trains run here:
Amtrak:
Borealis: This train runs from Chicago Union station to St. Paul-Minneapolis station. This runs one round trip a day, though a second round trip is coming soon.
Empire Builder: This runs from Chicago Union station all the way to Spokane. Then, the train splits into two different branches, the branch to Seattle, and the branch to Portland. This runs one round trip per day, or at least there are attempts to.
Hiawatha: This is essentially a commuter train ran by Amtrak. The Hiawatha runs from Chicago Union station to Milwaukee Intermodal station. There are eight trips to Milwaukee and seven trips to Chicago.
Metra:
MD-N: This is a regional train that runs from Chicago Union station to Foxlake, using the C&M subdivision (where it stops at Glenview) until Ronduit, where it then branches off into the Fox Lake subdivision, which is owned by Metra. Trains run about once every half hour to once every hour or so, and are much more local than the Hiawatha train.
Tour
These are low floor trains, so this is in fact level boarding. This is the same for Metra.
These platforms are incredibly thin, which suggests that they probably can't handle large crowds. Doesn't help that the shelter is so small.
It looks like a small shack, not hugely different from something on SEPTA or older NJT stations outside of design and materials. If this was on SEPTA, the entire shelter would be green.
Again, this station is fully accessible.
For some reason, all Metra stations have free newspapers and mailboxes?
There's actually a decent amount of parking at this station, more than one may expect.
Bus Connections
There are three bus routes that go here, all ran by PACE:
- 210 - Lincoln Avenue: This bus runs from Lincolnwood Town Center to Glenbrook Hospital, which is in Glenview. This runs about once an hour, though trip times are a little bit nonsensical.
- 422 - Linden CTA-Glenview-Northbrook: This bus links those three places together in a very deviatory way. Service runs every half hour, or so.
- 423 - Linden CTA-The Glen-Harlem CTA: This links Wilmette, Northfield, Glenview, and the Harlem Avenue corridor together. This bus runs essentially whenever it wants to. There's also at least one trip that runs to Evanston instead of Linden CTA, for some reason???
Points of Interest Near Glenview
Downtown Glenview has a lot of stores and restaurants immediately near the station itself. There's a lot you can do in this place if you give yourself about an hour or two there. Much of Glenview isn't very pedestrian friendly, but the downtown itself is at the very least.
