Station Review #177: Westmont (PATCO)


Westmont is a PATCO station located at 100 Stoy Avenue in Haddon Township, New Jersey. The station is located within Westmont, a town which constitutes 90% of Haddon township (the rest being the unincorporated towns of West Collingswood and West Collingswood Extension). 
 

History

Originally, the southern half of PATCO was part of the Camden and Atlantic Railroad, a rail line constituting parts of PATCO and the present day Atlantic City Line. Westmont used to have another station on this line: Cuthbert, located at Cuthbert Boulevard.

In the mid 1960s, both old stations were demolished, and the entire line was elevated in the conversion to PATCO service. There was now frequent, direct service to Philadelphia, but service to Atlantic City was lost.
 
In 2011, Westmont station was made accessible with elevators added.

This is just every PATCO station south of Broadway. A lot of them are elevated, many are single platform, two tracks, and they all have a lot of parking.

Lobby.

Every newer PATCO station also has a lobby, much like this one. There are benches, maps, schedules, TVMs, faregates, etc. What's missing is bathrooms, and no PATCO station has those. In my humble opinion, this screams Great Society metro.

Bus connections 


There are two bus connections, both from NJT:

  • 450 - Cherry Hill Mall to Walter Rand Transportation Center via Audubon: This bus runs via several different roads to the south and east of Camden, acting as a radial link for several towns in Camden county. The 450 runs about once an hour.  
  • 451 - Voorhees Town Center to Walter Rand Transportation Center:  The 451 bus runs along Haddon Avenue, giving it local service. The 451 runs once every 75 minutes. 

Points of Interest Near Westmont Station

In Haddon Township, there are a lot of shops and restaurants, along with apartments. The town is surprisingly walkable and even has festivals occasionally.

North Wales is a station on SEPTA's Lansdale-Doylestown Line. Station Review #78: Cornwells Heights (Amtrak/SEPTA)

Cornwells Heights (pronounced and often misspelled as "Cornwell Heights") is a train station along the Northeast Corridor. The station is located at 700 Station Avenue in Cornwells Heights, PA, a CDP located within Bensalem, PA.  The station is mainly served by SEPTA's Trenton line. Despite this, three trips of Amtrak's Keystone Service stop at the station every day: 640 (7:02 AM), 649 (3:51 PM), and 655 (7:40 PM). Cornwells Heights is currently the least used Amtrak station in the state of Pennsylvania.  From Station Avenue to the edge of the park and ride, this station is about half a mile long.  History Despite how it is today, Cornwells Heights was not nearly as important as it is now for much of its existence. Wayne is a station on SEPTA's Paoli-Thorndale line. The station is located at Station Road and Wayne Avenue in Wayne, PA. Wayne is a village located within Radnor Township, along Lancaster Avenue. Many people unfamiliar with the area tend to get Wayne and Wayne Junction stations mixed up.
