Station Review #68: Oregon (SEPTA)

Oregon is a station along SEPTA's Broad Street Subway. The station is served by the B1 service.

History

Oregon station opened with the extension of the Broad Street Line to Pattison Avenue as an infill station. This was done as the area around Broad and Oregon had been growing in popularity for many years, and a lot of new housing had been constructed in the area. The station itself opened on April 8th, 1973 with NRG station.

One of the head houses

Oregon station is designed in such a way that the mezzanines are at ground level, which made station construction much cheaper than otherwise. There are two of these headhouse/mezzanine combinations on either side of Oregon Avenue.

Oh and while we're at it, lets look at the really ugly walls

Bus Connections

Oregon station is a main bus hub for South Philadelphia. There are five bus connections that can be made here, these are:

G: This bus goes between Columbus Commons or South Philadelphia Food Distribution Center and 63rd and Malvern loop, Overbrook Station, or Lankeneau Medical Center. This bus is well known for being a mess, and is also the main provider of crosstown service along Oregon Avenue. Post-Bus Revolution, this bus will be called the 63.

4: This is a bus that goes from Fern Rock Transportation Center to NRG station, going along Broad street from between Rising Sun Avenue and NRG station. For the rest of its route it goes along Rising Sun Avenue and 9th Street.

7: This bus goes between 33rd-Dauphin and Pier 70 Shopping Center via 22nd-23rd Streets and Oregon Avenue. Post-Bus Revolution, this route will no longer go to Oregon station and instead will end at the Southern Depot.

45: This bus goes between the Marconi Plaza neighborhood and Callowhill Street via 12th-13th streets. It replaces the southern section of the 23, broken at this point due to traffic making the route unable to be on time otherwise.

68: This bus goes from 69th Street Transportation Center to Oregon station via the Airport Business Park. Rather than going to the airport, this route goes around it. Post-Bus Revolution, this route will be shortened to go between the Airport Business Park and Oregon station and rerouted via the Philadelphia Auto Mall/Southwest Philadelphia Industrial Park, taking over that from the 37.

Points of Interest near Oregon Station

There are a few points of interest near Oregon Station, though most are either stores or restaurants. Besides those, there is also the Marconi Plaza Park, a park that has gained much (deserved) controversy in the past few years, due to the large statue of Christopher Columbus in the park.

Frankly, its much more likely that people instead will use this station to transfer to a bus than to go to something nearby the station because there really is not much. TOD is definitely a bit lacking here.
