Station Review #11 and ½: North Philadelphia (Chestnut Hill West) (SEPTA)

Image
Ah yes, part two of my ongoing series on the North Philadelphia Station Complex  North Philadelphia CHW is a station on the Chestnut Hill West line, located in North Philadelphia (hence the name), near 16th and Indiana. Much like most of the other North Philadelphia stations, this station is absolutely awful, and it's not hard to see why.  History  I can't find any old photos of this area directly, but it was always an extra area just off of the main station, as seen from the only aerial photo I found of the station. The station used to at least have a station house and shelters. Those are all gone, and replaced by... Nothing. Concrete Platform Tour Chestnut Hill West Train There isn't much of anything here. There are two bus stop type shelters, and nothing else.  Everything To add insult to injury, the shelters are in very bad condition. The Center City shelter has all of its glass broken, and papers are taped to the pillars of the shelt

Station Review #8: Lawndale [PRE RENOVATION] (SEPTA)

Lawndale Station is a SEPTA station on the Fox Chase line, in the Lawncrest neighborhood of Philadelphia. As the portion of the Fox Chase line this station is on is also part of the Philadelphia city line, Lawndale Station is also in Cheltenham, PA. However, Lawndale station cannot be accessed from Cheltenham, PA. Lawndale Station is a Zone 2 station.  History Lawndale station on an old map Lawndale Station has a very vague history. The station itself was established in the 1890s, leading to the neighborhood gaining that name. That much is known. Information gets much murkier when trying to figure out what the station originally looked like. What is known is that the current shelters most likely date ti the 1960s, most likely predating SEPTA's acquisition of the station.  Station Tour The shelter View of the entire station from south to north As you can tell, there is very little at Lawndale Station. A closer look at the s

Station Review #5: Allegheny Station (SEPTA)

Image
Allegheny Station is a SEPTA train station located on 22nd and Allegheny, in the Allegheny neighborhood of Philadelphia. This station is the southernmost station on the Manayunk - Norristown line that us unique to the line, as North Broad also serves the Lansdale - Doylestown line. Allegheny is a Zone 1 station.  Train at the station Allegheny Station is located on the side of an overpass, and this means a lot of things for the station. More specifically, a good train station on the side of an overpass would not only have the good views that stations of this type are known for, but need more features for accessibility.  22nd and Allegheny 22nd north of Allegheny The sign from above For what it has in views, this station does not make up any of that in terms of accessibility. In order to get to the station, you have to take two fairly steep staircases (one for northbound, one for southbound). There is no ramp. And to make every

Station Review #4: Fox Chase (SEPTA)

Fox Chase Station's Main Sign Fox Chase is a train station in the Fox Chase neighborhood of Philadelphia. Fox Chase station is the northern terminus station for the Fox Chase Line. Train Stoppers at Fox Chase Station. Fox Chase station is located in a very central spot in the Fox Chase neighborhood. It's between the intersections of Rhawn and Oxford and Rhawn and Verree, though much closer to the former. Because of it's location, Fox Chase station is fairly easy to get to from other parts of the neighborhood.  What's at the Train Station Fox Chase Station's building Fox Chase Station has one platform, and the structure of the station itself is on the northwestern side of said structure. There is a platform (with a ramp at the ends for those who are disabled), benches, a main building, canopy, and signs among other things. Behind the station, there's a parking lot. The benches under the canopy Unsurprisingly, this s
